Before you apply

Skills assessment, occupations and English

Skills assessment

An assessing authority, such as Engineers Australia, ACS, VETASSESS or Trades Recognition Australia, confirms your qualifications and experience match your occupation.

Occupation lists

Your occupation must be on the list for the visa you want. The 189 uses the long-term list; state nomination and regional visas can use wider lists, set by each state or territory.

English

Competent English is the minimum. Higher scores earn points and often make the difference between being invited or not.

The steps

From skills assessment to grant

Skilled migration is a sequence. A mistake in your points claim or your Expression of Interest can lead to refusal, so each step is checked before you move to the next.

  1. Points and occupation check

We confirm your occupation, the lists it appears on and a realistic points score.

  2. Skills assessment and English

We prepare your skills assessment with the correct assessing authority and plan your English test.

  3. Expression of Interest

Your EOI is lodged in SkillSelect with accurate claims, and state nomination applications where relevant.

  4. Invitation and visa application

Once invited, the visa application must be lodged within 60 days, with evidence for every point claimed.

  5. Health, character and grant

We manage health examinations, police certificates and any Department requests.

Questions

Skilled migration questions

Is there an age limit?

For the 189, 190 and 491 visas you must generally be under 45 when you are invited to apply.

How long does my Expression of Interest last?

An EOI stays in SkillSelect for up to two years. Invitations are issued in rounds, based on occupation and points.

Do I need to have the points at the time of invitation?

Yes. You must hold the points you claimed when you are invited, and be able to prove them when you apply. Incorrect claims can lead to refusal.

Which is better, the 190 or the 491?

The 190 is permanent from the start. The 491 is a five-year provisional visa for regional Australia that can lead to permanent residence through the 191. The right choice depends on your points, occupation and plans.

How many points do you have?

We'll check your points, occupation and nomination options in one consultation.
